Eugene Field papers, 1860-1930 [manuscript].

Collection includes handwritten manuscripts of Field's writings in verse and prose; correspondence between Field, his family, friends and colleagues; publications by or about Field; researchers' correspondence and articles; and information on collections held by private institutions. Material conveys Field's personal and private life. Writings by Field are divided into three categories: verse, prose, and general. Field wrote the manuscripts by hand and many include small drawings or illustrations. Collection also includes family photo albums and letters Field wrote to his wife and children, providing insight to Field's close relationship with his family. The collection includes extensive materials produced by researchers and collectors. Papers consist of correspondence, notes, articles, tributes, indexes, and lists of Field collections.

Eugene Field, an American writer, was born in 1850 to Rosewell Field and Frances Reed. After his mother's death in 1856, he and his brother were sent to live with a cousin in Amherst, Massachusetts. He studied at Williams College from 1868-69. He then studied for a short time at Knox College in Illinois and at the University of Missouri. He married Julia Sutherland Comstock on October 16, 1873.
